A Picture is Worth a Thousand Lies

Coming from a context of domestic violence, this project begins with the confrontation of a void: the absence of childhood memories and the realization that what remained was a “happy childhood” constructed entirely by photographs. Drawing on research showing how images can retroactively fabricate memory, this work seeks to undo the authority of the family archive.

I chemically dissolve these analogue photographs, erasing the “perfect family” narrative to expose the fragile truths hidden in silence and trauma. The original objects are destroyed in the process. What remains are high-resolution “ghost-images”, records of erasure where the photograph is pushed toward disappearance rather than revelation. This is an ongoing intervention; a systematic undoing of the image that continues as long as the archive persists.

Image selection. The project counts with over 200 images so far.
