I Used to Draw my Mother as a Horse

When I was a child, I used to draw my mother as a horse. I don’t know why. At the time, it wasn’t a metaphor or a decision, it was just how she appeared to me on paper.

Returning to a childhood image of my mother as a horse, I explore endurance, survival, and memory. The horse is not a metaphor but a persistent, unresolved presence… a space to sit with what persists and what remains unspoken.

My Mother was a horse.
She wore saddles almost all her life.
When we finally took them off,
she no longer knew
how to walk on her own.

You look just like your mother, 2026. Acrylic paint and photo transfers on wood. 143 x 148 cm.
Exhibition view in Frank Mohr Institute, NL.
