About

Joana Duarte

Portugal, 1999. Between the Netherlands and Portugal.

I grew up inside a curated family archive where photographs were coherent but lived experience was not. At a certain point, I was told my memories were unreliable. That fracture revealed how easily images replace experience, and how authority decides what becomes believable.

My practice begins from this instability. Through transfer, chemical intervention, fragmentation, and participation, images are allowed to fail and to change through contact.

Family albums do not preserve truth. They produce it.
